Cartier-Bresson Image Critique

https://pro.magnumphotos.com/Asset/-2S5RYDZSYU8F.html
 1.  I choose this image because I can draw a lot of emotions from it.  First you see what appears to be a child and cat. They look like they are both looking at each other which makes me wonder if they know each other or if the cat is a stray.  I took in a black stray cat and two dogs so this photo connects with me.  I really enjoy animals and their varying personalities but I also know some people are still very weary of black cats because of the "bad luck" they bring.

This photograph being black and white makes your eyes focus right on the child and cat.  You lose the distractions of any other colors which might take away from the focus on them.  The alley and two building walls point you right to them with the light at the end.  The vertical lines coming form the buildings across the street also help bring your focus to them.  The darkness of the walls and then its gets lighter at the end near where they sit also grabs your attention to the lighter area which gets dark again on the other side of the road. The repetition with the dark and lighter light adds good contrast to the photograph.  I like how the walls have some texture but not enough to distract you from the focal point. The photo has a lot of negative space but in this photo it works.  It gives you the feeling of the city of Manhattan but also makes you wonder why the streets and alleys are so empty.  If you look closely you can see the hat the child is wearing, this hat gives you the feeling this is an older photo.  This photo was taken in 1947. The pov from the photographer makes you wonder if he found the cat, is feeding it, is dropping it off, or he was just happy to run across it in the alleyway.  This photo seems very peaceful with not a lot of noise to it which also makes it feel sad.  The lack of people could mean something is wrong, that he was left alone in the alleyway.  This photograph leaves you with so many questions for just a seemingly simple photo.

2.  I selected this image because it was very confusing to me at first glance.  I originally thought the lighter areas were reflections in water of the trees but then I saw the gentleman walking in the lower left corner.  It then made me look harder at what was actually going in this photo for clarity.

The trees being planted one next to each other creates repetitive lines across the photograph.  The building also creates similar lines leading in the same direction and angle as the trees. The white space is what got my attention, the ground could be a sand or concrete but it makes it hard to tell from this angle.  Seeing the people on the ground shows you this photographer must have been very high up to get this point of view.  The man walking looks very small in comparison to the trees which makes me feel a sense of power in this photo.  You can see the building in the top portion of this photo which looks like some sort of barracks.  Some of the windows being open and having a glare from the sun or sky on them cause different shades of gray which also brings your attention in.  The building over looks the trees, so does the building go all the way around and the garden is in the center of it?  After looking up the Palais Royal Garden I now know this building does go all the way around, therefore the photo could've been taken from one of these windows. I don't believe there is just one focal point, my eyes wander to many places around this photo.  The trees and windows create many different textures in this photo which also causes a variation of many shades of gray. This photo doesn't have much negative space because the trees and building fill the photo completely. This photo does have pretty deep spacial depth to it when comparing the height of the photographer to the men on the ground and as well as the to the building in the background.  The top left corner where all of the lines lead to is very far away which you can tell by the size of the windows, they become increasingly smaller.  This photo has a good balance of man-made and natural items. The trees still have their leaves; therefore, I would assume this photo was taken in the spring or summer. What kind of people come here? Is it for work or play?

Project 6 Proposal

In this project my goal would be to show the ins/outs of the daily life of a first time mother.  My sister recently had a baby girl.  We all like to think we know what we would do in every minute of being a parent but the truth is you learn as you go.  I want to photograph my sister through out her early days of being a mother.  Her emotions, the baby's emotions, and how it is seen from my perspective.
I would follow my sister around and capture moments of their lives throughout their daily routine. Early mornings, feedings, daily activities, stretches, naps, the house environment, the cleaning, etc.

In this project my goal would be to portray the daily routine of my life besides my work (its restricted, unable to take photos there.)  Being a single household owner with pets, working night shift full-time, and going school during the day full-time can have its overwhelming moments.  When I decided to buy my house I was very naive to all of the daily things that go into it.
I would take photos of everything through out my daily.  My mornings, yard work, pet up-keeping (even the ugly stuff), laundry, cleaning, cooking, maintenance, etc.
